Chromic Acid Test
Jones oxidation test: K₂Cr₂O₇/H₂SO₄ distinguishes oxidizable alcohols from 3° alcohols.
How It Works
1
Three Unknown Alcohols
Tubes A, B, C contain 1°, 2°, and 3° alcohols.
2
Add Chromic Acid
K₂Cr₂O₇/H₂SO₄ is orange. If the alcohol can be oxidized, it turns green.
3
Observe Color Change
Orange → Green = oxidizable (1° or 2°). No change = 3° alcohol.
Reaction Key
1° Alcohol:
Orange → Green (oxidized to aldehyde/carboxylic acid)
2° Alcohol:
Orange → Green (oxidized to ketone)
3° Alcohol:
No color change (cannot be oxidized)
