Bromine Water Test
Bromine water gets decolorized by phenol with white precipitate of tribromophenol.
How It Works
1
Three Unknown Compounds
Tubes A, B, C contain phenol, alcohol, and aniline.
2
Add Bromine Water
Orange bromine water reacts with phenols and anilines via electrophilic substitution.
3
Observe Decolorization
Orange → colorless + white ppt = Phenol or Aniline. No change = Alcohol.
Reaction Key
Phenol:
Orange decolorized + White precipitate (2,4,6-tribromophenol)
Aniline:
Orange decolorized + White/yellow ppt (2,4,6-tribromoaniline)
Alcohol:
No decolorization, no precipitate
