Activity 6.1 — Touch-me-not Plant

NCERT Activity 6.1: Touch the leaves of a Mimosa pudica (Touch-me-not) plant and observe how the leaves fold and droop in response.

How To Perform

1

Observe the Plant

Look at the Mimosa pudica plant with its fully open, compound leaves.

2

Touch the Leaves

Gently touch one of the leaflets with your finger.

3

Watch the Response

Observe how the leaves rapidly fold inward and the petiole droops.

4

Trace the Pathway

Understand the stimulus → electrical signal → water loss → folding pathway.

5

Classify the Response

Identify why this happens and what type of movement it is.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Handle the plant gently — excessive touching can stress the plant.
  • Observe the plant in a well-lit area for the best visual response.
  • Wait for leaves to fully recover before touching again.
