Activity 1.9 — Na₂SO₄ + BaCl₂
NCERT Activity 1.9: Mix sodium sulphate solution and barium chloride solution. Observe the formation of a heavy white precipitate of barium sulphate (BaSO₄) — a double displacement reaction.
How To Perform
1
Add Sodium Sulphate Solution
Take ~3 mL of clear Na₂SO₄ solution in test tube A.
2
Add Barium Chloride
Pour BaCl₂ solution from tube B into tube A.
3
Observe
A heavy white precipitate of BaSO₄ forms immediately.
4
Identify the Type
Two ionic salts exchange ions — what type of reaction is this?
⚠️ Safety Notes
- •Barium chloride is toxic if ingested — wash hands after handling.
- •Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
- •Do not pour waste solutions down the drain without dilution.
