Activity 1.8 — Pb(NO₃)₂ + KI
NCERT Activity 1.8: Mix lead nitrate solution and potassium iodide solution. Observe the formation of a bright yellow precipitate of lead iodide (PbI₂) — a double displacement reaction.
How To Perform
1
Add Lead Nitrate Solution
Take ~3 mL of clear Pb(NO₃)₂ solution in test tube A.
2
Add Potassium Iodide
Pour KI solution from tube B into tube A.
3
Observe
A bright yellow precipitate of PbI₂ forms immediately.
4
Identify the Type
Two ionic salts exchange ions — what type of reaction is this?
⚠️ Safety Notes
- •Lead compounds are toxic — wash hands after handling.
- •Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
- •Do not ingest any of the solutions.
