Activity 4.3 — Saturated vs Unsaturated
NCERT Activity 4.3: Compare saturated (single bond) and unsaturated (double/triple bond) hydrocarbons. Test with bromine water to see the difference.
How To Perform
1
Examine Ethane
Study ethane (C₂H₆) with its single C—C bond — a saturated hydrocarbon.
2
Examine Ethene
Study ethene (C₂H₄) with its double C=C bond — an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
3
Examine Ethyne
Study ethyne (C₂H₂) with its triple C≡C bond — highly unsaturated.
4
Br₂ Water Test
Test all three with bromine water to see which decolorizes it.
5
Compare Results
Understand why unsaturated compounds are more reactive.
⚠️ Safety Notes
- •Bromine water is corrosive and can cause skin burns — handle with gloves.
- •Bromine vapors are toxic — perform in a fume hood.
- •Ethyne (acetylene) is highly flammable — keep away from flames.
